Well, after a year of fangasming over it, I finally have Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. ...And have had it for about a month now. Nonetheless, it's a very fun game. It's easy to pick up for beginners, and deep enough for the experts to dominate in it.
That said, I'm no expert. I'm more inbetween the two, but lean more towards the beginners side. That said, I can still do some Air Combos and such. I have to thank my "training" in Marvel vs. Capcom 2 for that, even though MvC2 is faster and has 3-Man teams and different Assist types. Actually, BECAUSE, TvC is slower, I can more easily pull off longer Air Combos in this game than in MvC2.
Anyway, it's amazing that this game even made it to the West. Because of all the licensing issues for the Tatsunoko side, we were all convinced that this game would never see the light of day outside of Japan. ...Well, Capcom managed to make it work, and how, too! They added five new characters to the original roster of Cross Generation of Heroes, but the stinginess of the Italian license holder caused Hakushon Daimao to be removed. The tradeoff was worth it, though. Especially with Tekkaman Blade and Zero.
Another thing removed were the Character themes, which would play when that character enters the battle. Licensing issues also axed the Tatsunoko themes, and the Capcom themes were taken down with them for the sake of equality. A shame that UAS couldn't have the themes of Alex, Batsu, Casshan, Chun-Li, Kaijin no Soki, Karas, Megaman Volnutt, Morrigan, Roll (the Japanese version), Tekkaman, and Viewtiful Joe, but the awesomeness of the stage music of Orbital Ring Systems Cargo Bay makes up for each one of them. I'm also very happy that "The Rising Sun" was kept for the final form of Yami.
They also added Wi-Fi to the game, but I have yet to go on. I hear that it can be rather laggy (like all Wii games with online, sadly), but they said that it's leagues better than Super Smash Bros. Brawl's was (which was a disaster). I think I'll keep training a bit before I take the online frontier. The Mini-Games in CGoH were also removed, in favor of an enhanced version of PTX-40A's game called "Ultimate All-Shooters". I only played it a few times, though. I wish there were more characters playable in it, as well, aside from Ryu, Ken the Eagle, Tekkaman Blade, and PTX-40A. After all, how does Saki, the only character in the game with a giant gun, not make in this game?!
Other relatively minor greviences I have with the game are as follows:
- I wish this game had a Vs. Computer mode, but it seems that many Fighting games ignore this.
- I wish the Character Select Screen and Character lists were organized better. There's really no reason that the new characters are at the end of their lists, behind the Giants.
- I wish the Gallery had more to offer, such as information on the Character's backgrounds and stages.
Other than that, I am loving this game. Many of the characters are easy to use, and I have already found my team in Casshan, Zero, Tekkaman Blade, Batsu, Megaman Volnutt, Karas, Kaijin no Soki and Ippatsuman. My sister's boyfriend loves the game, too. Even if I regularly wipe the floor with him (revenge for Marvel vs. Capcom 2, lol).
Many PS360 fanboys are begging Capcom to release the game on the PS3 and X-Box 360, because the Wii "doesn't deserve a hardcore fighter." I laugh at that notion. They seem to bitch about every "hardcore" game that gets released on the Wii and refuse to buy the console, but then tell the Wii-owners to buy a PS3/X360 when the Wii is skipped over for the latest game on their consoles. It's hypocritical. The original Arcade release of the game was built on Wii-based technology, so porting to the Wii was the obvious choice. Capcom has gone on record saying that they'd have to build the game from the ground up to release it on the other consoles, and they said that, in that case, they'd be better off making a sequel for those consoles. So, those PS360 fanboys need to STFU. ...Except in a rather recent interview, Capcom said that they'd consider porting it to those consoles if there's enough of a demand... Considering that former Wii-exclusive title No More Heroes has been ported over to the PS3... Dammit.
I hope this series stays exclusive to the Wii. After all, the PS360 already has [Super] Street Fighter IV, BlazBlue: Calamity Trigger, Tekken 6, Soul Calibur IV, and Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Let the Wii have Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, people.
